The Trial of Tom Robinson

  • It is important to know both sides of this Trial so that you can make your own judgement as to whether the verdict of Tom Robinson was just.
To Kill a Mockingbird: The Trial of Tom Robinson.
Setting: 1930’s Maycomb, Alabama Courthouse. Judge Taylor.
Suspect: Tom Robinson. Defended by Atticus Finch.
Prosecution: Mr. Gilmer; State Of Alabama. Representing Bob Ewell and the Ewell Family.
Problem: On the night of November 21, African American Tom Robinson was walking home from work when Mayella Ewell invited him inside to do a chore. Ewell claims that Robinson raped her and fled the scene. Robinson was arrested later that night.

Witnesses:

  • On November 21, Robert Ewell Sr. urged him to inspect the Ewell household because Mayella Ewell was raped.
  • When Tate arrived, he found Mayella to be badly bruised on the right side of her face.
  • No doctor had been called.

  • On the evening of November 21, Bob Ewell was coming out of the woods with a load of kindling when he heard his Mayella yelling.
  • When he reached his house, he looked through the window to see Tom Robinson raping Mayella.
  • Testifies that Robinson fled and no doctor was called because it was too expensive.
  • Is left handed: A left handed man would be more than likely to leave bruises on the right side.

  • Testifies that she saw Tom Robinson and called him into the house to break up a dresser for her. Once he got inside the house, he grabbed and took advantage of her.
  • Questioned why she did not put up a better fight and why she did not scream so her brothers and sisters could help.
  • Rejects the fact that her father beat her.
  • Could not answer: How could Tom Robinson-a man with a useless left hand, which was torn apart by a cotton gin-bruise the right side of her face?
  • Cries and refuses to answer any more questions.

  • Testifies that he always passes the Ewells house and that Mayella Ewell always invites him in to do chores.
  • On the evening of November 20, Mayella Ewell invited him inside to fix a door. Once he got inside, he realized that there was nothing wrong with the door.
  • Also realized that the all the Ewell children were gone as Mayella said that she sent them to buy ice cream.
  • Testifies that Mayella asked him to fix a dresser, when he tried to do so, she grabbed his legs and told him to kiss her. Bob Ewell then saw her through the window, called her a whore, and chased after Tom.

Verdict: Tom Robinson found guilty.
